Employment Opportunity: Instructor (Ocean Mapping)

The School of Ocean Technology (SOT) ( www.mi.mun.ca/sot ) is part of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University which is Canada’s most comprehensive centre for education, training, applied research and industrial support for the ocean industries. The School of Ocean Technology delivers programs at the diploma, bachelor and graduate level which meet the needs of this sector, focusing on key technological areas such as ocean characterization, instrumentation and observation and autonomous vehicle technology.  As new technologies continue to shape the ocean industries, SOT will play a critical role in educating and training highly qualified people. These personnel will lead research and development initiatives supporting the growth of these industries while also engaging the community. 

The ideal candidate will join an existing team of faculty and staff to help address challenges of the ocean technology community. As part of the ocean mapping team, the candidate will work closely with the centre of applied ocean technology (CTEC) (www.mi.mun.ca/ctec ) and the Canada Research Chair in Ocean Mapping.

DUTIES

The successful applicant will be responsible for developing and teaching a variety of courses in Ocean Technology programs as well as related courses that are part of other programs within the Marine Institute. Duties include developing new programs with a particular focus on applied research-based graduate programming in the ocean mapping and characterization field. The successful applicant will be responsible for the delivery of classroom, laboratory, and field components of the respective courses; as well as performing other related duties as required.  

The successful applicant is expected to conduct relevant research that compliments the mandate of the Institute, as a part of the development of a dynamic, grant supported research program that includes the supervision of graduate students and PDFs.  The candidate will be expected to maintain a publication record in a field relevant to the research mandate of the Institute. Knowledge mobilization and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment is expected.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Marine Geomatics, Marine Geology, Ocean Engineering, Oceanography or a related discipline, as well as experience (3-5 years) with ocean characterization, data collection, processing, interpretation, and dissemination. This would be achieved through the use of instrumentation and platforms such as acoustics and optics, from ship based and/or autonomous surface and subsurface vehicles. The ability to integrate with other active research programs in autonomous systems, sensor development and deployment would be beneficial. Demonstrated abilities in designing projects, writing proposals, securing external funding, implementing research programs and supervising students are also preferred. Previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level would be an asset

Commensurate with Marine Institute Instructors’ Collective Agreement (NAPE Local 7405)
